Yanmar Co., Ltd. is a Japanese diesel engine manufacturer. It was founded in Osaka, Japan in 1912. Its headquarter is situated at Kita-ku, Osaka, Japan. The company was founded by Magokichi Yamaoka. Their engines are widely used in applications including seagoing vessels, construction equipment, agricultural equipment and generator sets. Takehito Yamaoka is the president of the company is the key people of the company. "The name Yanmar is a combination of the Yanma Dragonfly (known by names such as Oniyanma and Ginyanma) and the "Yama" from the name of the company founder Magokichi Yamaoka."

 

History

When the company began in 1907, it manufactured gasoline-powered engines before switching to diesel in 1920. The company concentrates in diesel engines, and also makes light fishing boats, hulls for ships, tractors, combine harvesters, rice-planting machines, gas heat pumps, snow throwers, transporters, tillers, mini excavators, portable diesel generators Side by Side UTV and Heavy Utility Machinery.

On December 23, 1933, HB model, world's first commercially viable small diesel engine (5-6Hp), was launched. In 1952, Yanmar Diesel Co. Ltd. name was adopted. K1, world's smallest 4-cycle horizontal water cooled diesel engine model (1.5-2Hp), was launched and 4MSL medium speed auxiliary engine model (120-130Hp) was also introduced. In 1971, YB600 mini excavator series was launched. In 1980, 16ZL, Yanmar's largest output engine model (5,000 Hp) and FZ22 pleasure boat model was launched.
 

In 2006, EG 700 tractor series, the first in Japan to be equipped with an HMT continuously variable hydromechanical transmission, introduced. In 2016,  Yanmar increased its stake in the Indian company International Tractors, the maker of Sonalika branded tractors, to 30%. The company also bought German compact equipment maker Schaeff and forged a partnership with Toyota to develop “next generation hulls” for boats.

Within the last 20 years, Yanmar has also established a growing presence in the domestic UAV market in Japan and elsewhere, with small helicopter UAVs such as the Yanmar YH300 SL and Yanmar AYH-3, primarily used in agricultural spraying and other forms of aerial application. Yanmar was the first to put a diesel engine in a rice planting machine with a passenger seat. Yanmar also provides engines to John Deere tractors and Thermo King Corporation used in refrigerated trucks and trailers.
