May 3- Constitution Memorial Day (Kenpo Kinenbi)

The second holiday of Japan’s Golden Week after Showa Day comes on 3rd May. The day is a national holiday in Japan as it is celebrated as “Constitution Memorial Day” since the constitution of Japan came into effect on May 3, 1947 after World War II. The day is chosen to reflect on the meaning of democracy and Japanese government. Many newspapers, magazine publishes articles related to Japan’s government on this day. It is a part of collection of holidays known as Golden Week.

The present constitution of Japan replaced the Meiji Constitution. According to Japan’s present constitution, sovereignty lies with the people, while the Emperor is the symbol of the state and people’s unity. The three pillars on whose basis the constitution of Japan was formed are- sovereignty of the people, respect for fundamental human rights, and pacifism.

On this day, many people even visit the National Diet Building, because it is where the new constitution was made. The building is opened to public only on this day, and many people are seen taking snapshots of the building. People even attend lectures on the role the Constitution has played for more than 60 years and how it has made its impact on the lives of many Japanese. The day is also known for the flying of Chinese streamers.

The day is not only the second holiday of Japan’s Golden Week, but also the first public holiday of May. Golden Week is one of the biggest holiday weeks in Japan, and during this period people travel across the country and abroad, celebrate with families and Constitution Memorial Day is no such exception.
